Here we are to help you !
Lets start with few more informations.
Fuse box is an old consumer unit, it consist rewirable fuses inside (that is why they call it fuse box, because that is basically box with fuses). This is old version of electric centre in your home.
It still protect you from risk of fire by overcurrent protection but is far from perfect.
Quiet often we found that fuses in cartrdges are wrong size which mean they ware not provide any protection!
Now days we are using consumer units - it is like new version of fuse box but did not contains fuses but miniature circuit breakers (MCB) which will trip when they will detect a fault and you can reuse them after rectifying the fault. Both of them (fuse box and consumer unpoower in your homit) provide overcurrent protection and are designed to distribute electric power and control it. New consumer units contains also RCD which also provide additional protection which protect you by electric shock when touching live metal parts (like switches or kettle) in fault conditions.
With new consumer unit nowedays we are installing RCBO usually – protection device that provide overcurrent protection and protection agains electric shock; 2 in 1 (simply – they are brillaint :)
Soon we will have SPD which even more inprove our homes protection.
Like you can see there are more and more things invented to increase our safety which is great and most of important all new things are designed to fit our consumer units than when you have one, you can simply upgreade it!
What is consumer unit?
A consumer unit is heart of your electrical installation. A consumer unit is a particular type of distribution board that controls and distributes electrical energy throughout your installation.
What are consumer unit used for?
A Consumer Unit or Fuseboard is the single most important electrical device in any building. It protects electrical appliances from damage and more importantly, human beings from electrical shock.
What is the different between fuse box and consumer unit?
Consumer units are basically the modern and safer version of fuse boxes which in most cases are no longer compliant with current electrical regulations. If your house is fitted with an old fuse box, it might be time to for you to replace it
How much does it cost to installa consumer unit?
The cost of installing a new consumer unit is around £400 to £800 (testing, certification and notification to building control included). Everything is depending on the size of your property and amount od work that has to be done.
How long does it take to change consumer unit?
Change of a consumer unit take around 8hrs, inclusive of testing and certification.
How can I tell if I need a new consumer unit?
You should contact us if you suspect that any of the following may apply to your old fusebox
The fuse-board cover is missing
The fuse-board is damaged
There are any exposed live parts
The fuse-board is showing signs of over-heating
The fuse-board is overloaded
RCD protection is not provided
Should I upgrade my consumer unit?
Basically speaking, any consumer unit without an RCD needs an upgrade. This doesn’t always mean a whole new consumer unit so it is essential you speak to a registered, qualified electrician who can decide what needs to be done
With replaceing fuse box for consumer unit it is like with going to the doctor!
You are not going to doctor and expect him to tell you whats wrong with you (unless you broke a bone ;O) did you?
Doctor must first examine you, very often do some additional tests and then he can diagnose you and help.
Tha same situation is with replaceing your fuxe box.
First we are doing EICR (electrical installation condition report), we are inspection and testing you electrical installation before we carry out any work with your new consumer unit.
Why? Because when we will fit new, safety consumer unit with additional protection devices and your installation is in bad shape or there are some faults on cables than that extra devices will work and turn off your power!
Until you will find and rectify the fault!
That is why first we make sure everything is ok and if needed we repair all faults and when installation is safety we can replace your fuse box by new, shiny consumer unit :)
When everything is ok we are ready to replace your fuse box or old consumer unit to new ones.
That usually take us a half day – obvoiusly it is depend on amount of work to do, size of consumer unit and few more factors like bonding upgreade if required.
During this job there will be no power in your home than it is really important to plan it forward in day where you can enjoy some time without electric :)
When new consumer unit is fitted and working well than we have few more test to do on your installation with new safety devices – we just simulate event of faults and we make sure everything is working properly – that way we can confirm that everything is ok, working well and if anything happen your family will be safe :)
After consumer unit replace we will provide you certificate EIC (electrical installation certificate) which will confirm that competent, registered person do the job, everything is safe up to current regulations and standard.
Also we notify consumer unit replacement to building control of your local council and you will get letter with confirmation from them up to 30 days.
And it is done!
You are safe now :)
Now you can enjoy of new health hearth of your electrical installation :)
